‘A History of Medicine' explores the development of Medicine from its beginnings to the present and gives a glimpse of what the future might hold. Medicine has its origins with the herbalists treating the ill with herbal remedies about 60000 years ago. Hippocrates was the first to release medicine from any kind of religious superstition and to establish it as a science based on observation and case recording. Leonardo da Vinci's 'Vitruvian Man' is a study of the proportions of the human body, linking art and science in a single work. The Petri dish refers to the germ theory of Athanasius Kirchner who was the first to attribute infectious disease to a microscopic pathogen, inventing the germ theory of disease. The concept of medical imaging began in 1895 with the invention of the x-ray by a German professor of physics, Wilhelm Rontgen. Medical imaging has improved immensely since the first x-rays were taken over 120 years ago. We can only begin to imagine what new technologies such as CRISPR will bring to the future of Medicine.
